Are You a Good Candidate for Cosmetic Dentistry?

April 26, 2010 @ 01:32 AM — by Sheldon Seidman, DDS

Cosmetic dentistry isn’t necessarily for everyone, but most people will find a cosmetic dentistry treatment that is as perfectly suited to them as they are to it. Finding the right cosmetic dentistry treatment means first finding the right cosmetic dentist. As a cosmetic dentist with years of experience and a finger on the pulse of advances in the field, Dr. Sheldon Seidman understands how to create an ideal match between treatment plan and patient.

So what exactly determines who is a good candidate for cosmetic dentistry? It partly depends on one’s needs and goals, as well as the procedure in which one is interested. In general, a good candidate for cosmetic dentistry should:

  • Be in overall good health
  • Have realistic expectations for the procedure or procedures in which he or she is interested
  • Understand that some restorative work may be necessary in order to perform certain cosmetic procedures
  • Understand that most dental insurance plans do not cover cosmetic treatments to any degree
  • Ask as many questions as possible during the initial consultation so as to make the most informed decisions possible
  • Understand that some treatments, such as porcelain veneers, are non-reversible

Of course, individual treatments have their own criteria for candidacy. A good candidate for teeth whitening, for example, will have basically healthy teeth that suffer from primarily superficial staining. A good candidate for dental crowns, on the other hand, will probably require some reinforcement of weakened or damaged teeth in addition to cosmetic restoration.
