Inlays and Onlays Treatment

Inlays and Onlays TreatmentAt Smile Chicago, we offer modern dental treatment options for patients with all types of tooth decay. If you’re suffering from rear teeth that are mild to moderately decayed, our porcelain inlays and onlays treatment can restore the structure and chewing power of your tooth, while preventing any further damage for up to 30 years. When you meet with Dr. Sheldon Seidman at our Chicago cosmetic dentistry practice, you’ll receive expert care with special attention given to the aesthetics of your mouth.

Our Inlay Treatments

An inlay is an ideal treatment for a rear tooth affected by tooth decay. When decay is located in the indented top surface of the tooth between the cusps (the top projections of a tooth) and is too severe to be successfully treated with a filling, an inlay can correct the damage without the need for a dental crown. Our inlays are crafted from quality tooth-colored porcelain for a natural appearance. Porcelain restorations offer many benefits for patients, including greater durability and strength over metal inlays and silver fillings.

Our Onlay Treatments

If a patient’s tooth decay extends on to one or more of the tooth’s cusps, Dr. Seidman can use an onlay to restore and protect the tooth. An onlay is a similar but more extensive treatment for decay than an inlay, and covers more of the surface area of the tooth. Like an inlay, our porcelain onlays are sturdy, long-lasting, and provide superior aesthetic results over metal alternatives.

Benefits of Inlays and Onlays Treatment

Although not as commonly known among patients as fillings or dental crowns, inlays and onlays offer several advantages. Benefits offered by an inlay or onlay treatment include:

  • Minimal Drilling Required. Inlays and onlays treatments allow more natural tooth surface to be retained than other types of restorations.
  • Strength and Function. Rear teeth require restorations capable of withstanding heavy pressure for chewing.
  • Permanence. An inlay or onlay can last for three decades when oral health is maintained.

About Inlays and Onlays Procedures

Inlay and onlays have a very similar treatment process, and generally take only two visits to fully repair your tooth. On your first visit, Dr. Seidman will clean decay from the affected tooth, and then make an impression of the tooth so that your restoration can be crafted. On the final visit, your new inlay or onlay is bonded carefully in place for durability that can last for decades with proper care.

Additional Dental Treatments at Smile Chicago

From tooth decay to missing teeth, Dr. Seidman is skilled in treating cosmetic, restorative, and general dentistry needs. If tooth decay has damaged a tooth beyond the capabilities of an inlay or onlay, a porcelain dental crown can provide structural protection and restore tooth function with a natural look. We have successfully restored the smiles of our Chicago dental crowns patients with beautiful results.
